Under the direction of the Project Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for providing support to the supervisors, foremen and workers. This position will provide leadership and coordination of the day-to-day safety requirements of the assigned project.   The Health and Safety Advisor reports to the HS&E Manager and is responsible for providing advice and administrative assistance to the supervisor, foremen and workers in all matters related to Health and Safety. This is accomplished by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities.  Other duties may be assigned.


  • Ensure a safe work environment for all project employees, contractors and visitors.
  • Provide safety support and direction to all Supervisors.
  • Inform the Project Manager and supervision of any legislative changes within the projects time schedule.
  • Participate and assist in the investigation of incidents to determine cause.
  • Establish what is required to eliminate any possible reoccurrence an incident in the future.
  • Ensure safety obligations with clients are carried out as per the terms of the agreement, and communicated to the Project Manager and Supervisors.
  • Safety Specialists will maintain good relations with persons inside and outside of the company.
  • In conjunction with Project Manager and Supervisors, ensure new hires are orientated.
  • Ensures that company property is protected from vandalism.
  • Perform site inspections as per HS&E manual schedule.
  • Ensure that the following material is available on site, HS&E Manual, the applicable provincial OH&S legislation and regulations, site safety inspection forms, observation forms, tailboards and log books.
  • Ensure that incident reports are sent to the HSE Manager/Director as soon as possible.
  • Review tailboards on a daily basis to ensure that hazards are addressed and a mitigation process is in place; provide feedback to workers to assist them with compliance.
  • Ensure that safety meetings are held on a regular basis. This may be weekly/bi-weekly depending on the expectations of the client and the expectations of the HSE Manager/Director.
  • Ensure that inspections are performed as per schedule.
  • Communicate any significant issues or concerns with the HS&E Manager/Director for direction.
  • Communicate and assist workers to ensure that all safety expectations are met.
  • Manage client expectations and negotiate toward successful and positive results when issues arise.
  • Facilitate ongoing communications with the client and ensure responsiveness to issues/requests.
  • Provide direction and support to ensure compliance with company established policies and procedures; as well as those outlined by our clients.


Supervisory Responsibilities - Indirectly supervises the work and safety practices of various craftsmen in an industrial setting.  Gives guidance the craftsmen in regard to the same and escalates matters that require attention.

Qualifications - Certifications as required for compliance purposes; OSHA 10 hour course (minimum requirement); Displays safe attitude and behavior; People skills; Self Thinker; Hands on experience; Physically able to perform task; Demonstrate good analytical decision making during problem solving; 3 years minimum work experience in field safety in a chemical plant or refinery; Computer literate preferred.


Education and/or Experience - High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 10-30 hour OSHA course; Safety courses preferred - technical level or currently enrolled; 2 year A.A.S. a plus; Preferred - Basic First Aid/CPR, certified as an ECA, EMTP, RN a plus; Membership in professional organizations a plus, i.e. ASSE, WSO, NFPA, etc.


Language Skills - Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


Reasoning Ability -Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Computer Skills - Computer skills preferred for this position.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Depending on the job site, certain certificates or licenses may be required.


Other Skills and Abilities - For safety reasons, it is imperative that the employee be able to read and speak fluent English.


Other Qualifications - It may be necessary to travel or commute for this position.
