  • Overview

    General Description:


    Test, calibrate, troubleshoot, overhaul and repair controlling, indicating, measuring instrumentation and electrical devices/equipment. To ensure safe specified operating performance using a variety of testing and calibration equipment. Must have the ability to read and understand manuals, blueprint schematic and testing specifications. Must have good computer skills and thorough knowledge of PID’s, Loop drawings, electrical schematics and PLC’s.


    Education Requirements:

    • High School diploma or GED
    • Proficient in Math, Science and Computer Skills


    • Two year technical degree in Instrumentation or Electrical
    • NCCER Certified with a minimum of 5 years’ experience.

    Specific Job Duties:

    • Read and interpret work orders, technical descriptions, and safety manuals including NFPA 70E, NEC and ANSI.
    • Read blueprints, various types of schematics and loop drawings and prepare and enter job reports to computer system.
    • Toubleshoot and loop check PLC’s, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using proper test equipment to repair or replace faulty components, such as sensors, relays, switches, motors, modules or fixtures.
    • Assemble and disassemble all types of electronic process controls, pneumatic controls and hydraulic systems and components.  
    • Layout, fabricate, and install instrument, electrical and PLC components and cabinets.
    • Calibrate equipment using OEM calibration procedures.
    • Inspect and maintain switchgear, PLC’s, transformers, buss bars, circuit breakers, and wiring connections in power distribution sub-stations.
    • Test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components using voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers, etc.
    • Work with the principles and chemistry and physics required in instrumentation such as specific gravity, density of liquids and solids, mechanical advantages, proportions of liquids, melting points, freezing points, boiling points of liquids, etc.
    • Apply the procedures for measuring pressure level, flow, temperature, weight, density, heat flux, humidity and moisture, etc. when working with control loops.
    • Assist other crafts in accomplishing plant maintenance work.
    • Perform reliability walk-through and assist in inspections.
    • Maintain proper safety awareness and follow plant safety procedures in all plant activities.
    • Perform other duties as assigned or required by supervisor.


    Physical Requirements:


    Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, etc. (approx. 200 feet) and be tolerant of heights.


    Work Positions:

    1. Squatting.
    2. Sitting.
    3. Extended reach in front and overhead.
    4. Walking on non-level surfaces.
    5. Standing (for long periods of time on concrete floors).
    6. Bending and twisting.
    7. Kneeling
    8. Endure fast, steady pace for long periods.
    9. Must be able to get into and work in confined spaces.
    10. Must be able to lift/carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.).


    Must be able to:

    1. Pass respiratory physical and maintain respiratory physical status in order to wear respirator and become certified.
    2. Wear safety equipment including steel-toe shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, earplugs, etc.
    3. Hear effectively.
    4. Visually distinguish colors.
    5. Think and respond properly/quickly.
    6. Handle stress.
    7. Work 12-hour shift schedules or more as conditions warrant.
    8. Work in temperatures above 100 degrees and / or below freezing
    9. Must be able to work in FRC uniforms/clothing
